Alabama’s defense forced 28 turnovers during the 2024-2025 season. While that number is not bad, it is not particularly where Alabama’s defense wants to be in terms of the number of turnovers they create.
On Monday night, Alabama safety Bray Hubbard joined Roger Hoover on “Hey Coach“. He spoke about the emphasis that the secondary has placed on creating more turnovers in 2025.
“That’s something that we’ve focused on now is we gotta take the ball away more,” Hubbard said, “That’s something Coach Mo and Coach Jones have been harping to us about is we gotta take ball away more.”
Hubbard tied for first last season in interceptions. He and cornerback Zabien Brown each recorded three INT’s. Hubbard actually picked off three passes in three of Alabama’s final five games. Altogether, the secondary reeled in 13 interceptions. Meaning the group averaged one interception per game.
Hubbard added some insight on the mindset and approach that defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has on forcing turnovers.
“Coach Wommack always preaches to us that every single play of the game that the defense is out there that there’s 11 opportunities for the defense to take the ball away so however many snaps the defense plays, I mean you got 11 opportunities every single play to take the ball away,” Hubbard said, “That’s something we really gotta focus on is to take the ball away more.”
It is certainly encouraging to hear Hubbard’s comments on an area that the secondary as well as the entire defense want to improve upon. Creating turnovers is a point of emphasis this spring and will continue to be the entire 2025 season.
