Alabama football’s defense wants to cut down on defensive penalties in the future.
The Crimson Tide were tied at 115 among 133 FBS college football programs on the list of fewest penalties in the 2024 season. Alabama outpaced their opponents by more than 20 penalties. This output prompted Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack to put an emphasis on lowering the Tide’s number of defensive penalties.
This spring served as a step in the right direction for Alabama’s defensive unit, per Wommack.
“We took steps in the right direction,” Wommack said. “We wanted to continue to become more and more disciplined in limiting explosive plays and also keep the penalty numbers lower. I think we’ve got guys that are playing with more discipline, playing within themselves, doing their job, nothing extra, no foolish penalties. I think n three scrimmages that were all over 100 plays that we ran, we only had five penalties amongst those three scrimmages on defense. That’s a really tremendous number to look towards. I think three of those five penalties happened on guys that were maybe third or whatever on the depth chart. So, some real positives there in terms of the discipline that we’re playing with right now coming out of spring.”
Alabama’s defensive unit is expected to be one of college football’s best in 2025 with the amount of experience they are returning.
