Former Alabama football quarterback, Greg McElroy revealed he feels beating Florida in the SEC Championship Game in 2009 meant more to the Crimson Tide than beating Texas in the BCS National Championship Game.

McElroy was the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback when they defeated the Gators in the SEC title game and went on to beat the Longhorns to capture the first National Championship of the Nick Saban era.

The former Alabama signal caller was discussing the importance of his wedding day on  “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning”  with Cole Cubelic and was asked to compare it to beating Texas, and he shared beating Florida felt more meaningful to him and his teammates.

“Beating Florida would top beating Texas,” McElroy said. “We had no ill will at all towards Texas. We wanted to win but it was really more of a relief. Beating Florida was by far the bigger game. ”

Alabama defeated Tim Tebow and Florida 32-13 in a game that was a defining moment for the Saban era in Tuscaloosa.
