AJ McCarron feels an Alabama WR is the most ‘underrated guy’ on team

Alabama lost key players to the draft and the transfer portal during the past year, but one position that is returning a lot of production and has added more talent to the mix is wide receiver.

On the latest episode of The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide, AJ McCarron said he believes the receiving corps is the Crimson Tide’s top position group, not only because of Ryan Williams.

“[Germie] Bernard, I think, is the most underrated guy on the team,” McCarron said. “They should have gotten him the ball. I love that dude. I love watching him play. Great routes. Catches the ball in traffic. I think he is a playmaker at all times.”

Bernard stepped up and became the second reliable receiver for Alabama in 2024. He caught 50 passes for 794 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Also, Miami transfer Isaiah Horton is coming off a solid 2024 season, catching 56 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns.

Williams, Horton and Bernard could create some magic for Alabama, but the different quarterback and playcalling can factor into that.

With Ty Simpson as the current favorite to start under center in 2025, there is a solid chance that the Alabama receivers will see an increase in targets because of Simpson’s skillset as a quarterback. Last season, Jalen Milroe’s legs had to be factored into each drive because of how talented and explosive he is. With Milroe in the NFL, those quarterback carries will likely decrease, meaning more passing plays will be called for Alabama’s playmakers to get the football.
