Hugh Freeze comments on recruiting wide receivers after 5-Star picks Alabama over Auburn

Auburn has taken multiple recruiting blows this summer, losing talent to other SEC schools.

The latest blow came on Wednesday when five-star receiver, Cederian Morgan verbally committed to Alabama over Auburn, Colorado, Florida and Georgia.

This is not the first wide receiver Auburn has lost or missed out on in July. At the beginning of the month, four-star receiver, Denairius Gray flipped his commitment from Auburn to Kentucky.

The Tigers’ head coach Hugh Freeze spoke to media members at Auburn’s Lake Martin AMBUSH event on Wednesday night, and his comments on recruiting high school talent after the House Settlement raised some eyebrows. He mentioned the wide receiver position in particular.

“You were gonna sign your 20 to 25 guys, but now with the salary cap, you have to look at a room like our wide receiver room where on paper, we’re not losing a single kid,” Freeze said. “And we’ve gotta retain those guys, cause I like that room a whole lot. And so you don’t have the means, so to speak, to go after the number of high school receivers that you would normally go after because you can’t really — again on paper, we’re not losing any and I don’t wanna lose one. I really like that room. I love our young D-linemen. It’s kind of difficult to really — you’re sitting here trying to sign a class when you really don’t know what your current roster will be in January.”

Alabama and Auburn will continue to be familiar foes on the recruiting trail.
