5-Star freshman forcing competition at right tackle for Alabama

Alabama football’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb confirmed Monday there is a competition going on at right tackle.

Wilkin Formby started at the position in the Crimson Tide’s first two games of the season, but Michael Carroll earned some meaningful snaps there against Louisiana-Monroe.

Grubb says there is 100 percent a competition at the right  tackle position at the moment.

“I thought Michael did a great job,” Grubb said. “I think there are some things he certainly needs to clean up, but the thing I like about Michael is he does compete and what you saw on the field in the game, that’s how Mike practices too. He’s a super competitive physical kid that I thought did a really nice job for his first time.”

Carroll is a former five-star offensive lineman out of IMG Academy.

Kalen DeBoer described the freshman as a versatile offensive lineman during the spring.

“Yeah, he’s a versatile guy too,” DeBoer said. “Could play guard, had to play a little bit of tackle here this spring. Michael’s got the right mindset and attitude. I think there’s a learning curve for any player but especially offensive line and it’s physical, mental and Michael made the steps that you’d hope a player would make throughout the spring.”
