ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith changes tune on Alabama football

Stephen A. Smith was one of the many media members, who heavily criticized the way Alabama football opened the season against Florida State.

The ESPN personality went as far as to say he felt Kalen DeBoer was not the man for the job. However, Smith was singing a different Tune on ESPN’s First Take Thursday from Birmingham, Alabama after the Tide won six straight games.

“I can’t definitively say they’ve proven they’re the best team, but I will tell you they’re right in there in the conversation,” Smith said. “I mean, when I think about how they looked against Florida State, obviously that was a bad thing. But then they’ve won every game since, and they’ve won on the road at Georgia. They just beat Tennessee. They handled Missouri. They handled Wisconsin. You’re looking at the kind of things that they’re doing. It’s really about quarterback play. And when you got this kid Simpson, Ty Simpson playing ball the way that he’s playing ball. This is a leading candidate for the Heisman right now. He’s next level the way that he’s performing. If he continues to perform like that, could they win the National Championship? The answer would be yes. And so when we’re asking ourselves that question as to whether or not they’re the number one team in the nation, they’ve proven to be. I can’t definitively say no when their quarterback is looking the way he’s looking.”

Alabama football will look to continue to improve Saturday when the Crimson Tide travel to take on South Carolina.
