Why Alabama DC Kane Wommack is coaching with a little ‘extra umph’ ahead of Iron Bowl

Every Monday, Alabama’s coaches speak to the media before the upcoming game, and sometimes, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack kicks off the press conference and sets the tone for the week ahead.

Yesterday, he took the stage, and there was a subtle but noticeable difference in the way he carried himself during the press conference that may fly under most people’s radar. His focus was sharp, and the phrase that the younger generation would use in this situation is Wommack was locked in.

Wommack is locked in ahead of this year’s Iron Bowl, not only because of the playoff implications or the rumours swirling about him being a candidate for the Arkansas head coaching job; he has strong connections with people on the Auburn coaching staff.

“A lot of great connections on that staff,” Wommack said. “As you guys know, my brother-in-law [Dom Studinski] is there as the strength coach, and I think the world of Derrick Nix and glad that he’s getting an opportunity to call it. I know he’s waited a long time to do that. I’ve known him since I was probably seven, eight years old. Got great family ties. My sister actually was a surrogate for him and his wife and their daughter Ava, and so, just really happy for Derrick, and he’s doing a great job. I mean, you can tell a noticeable difference in some of the things they’re doing from an execution standpoint.”

For the first time in the Iron Bowl, Wommack will be calling plays against Nix. When Auburn fired Hugh Freeze, Nix became the play caller for every down, and he will be tasked with scheming against Wommack’s 4-2-5 “Swarm” defense.

Maybe Wommack’s comment included what could be interpreted as a shot at Freeze, but it also can be seen as him looking forward to this Iron Bowl clash even more now that Nix is calling the shots on offense.

Alabama defensive lineman Tim Keenan shared that Wommack is indeed coaching with a little “extra umph” and said he’s coaching his butt off like he has been each week.

“He pretty locked in,” Keenan said. “I mean, it’s kind of the same pretty much from week to week, but you can see the little extra umph to it. But it’s no different. Come in, tell us what we need to do. We go execute, we go have fun, and he coaches his butt off.”

The Iron Bowl will be a night game at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and Wommack will need to dial up a strong defensive plan to defeat Auburn and get to the SEC Championship.
