Maplesville is back on top as state champions after defeating Wadley 42-22 and avenging its loss to the Bulldogs in last year’s Class 1A State Championship.
The Red Devils secured their fifth state championship in school history with the victory. Wadley and Maplesville exchanged blows throughout the first half in this one.
The Bulldogs trailed at halftime 21-14, but Wadley had a chance to possibly tie this one up with them getting the ball first to start to second half. However, a fumble by the Bulldogs on their opening drive in the second half started what appeared to be an avalanche. The Red Devils scored off the turnover with a seven-yard rush from Eli Hubbert.
Nehemiah McCary stretched the Maplesville’s advantage to 35-14 in the third quarter. McCary struck again in the fourth quarter with a 51-yard rush to give Maplesville the commanding 42-14 lead.
Wadley’s Jaylon Marble put the final points of the game on the board.
