Alabama football scrimmaged for the second time since the beginning of fall camp on Thursday, and a 6-foot-5 wide receiver made the most of his opportunities.

With starting wide receiver Lotzeir Brooks missing time, sophomore wide receiver Derek Meadows got “a lot more opportunities” in Thursday’s scrimmage, and according to head coach Kalen DeBoer, Meadows made some “competitive catches”.

“I thought Derek, and again, a lot of this is because of the opportunities you get, he got more opportunities today than most of the receiving core,” DeBoer said. “I thought today was a really big growth day for him. Competitive catches in particular. So, using that big body to go up and make some plays. You’re not going to catch them all. It’s the ball placement. It’s the defender you’re going against. I like the way he’s battling, and he’s really grown.”

DeBoer mentioned that Meadows is a trustworthy player as far as knowing his responsibilities, but Thursday’s scrimmage was about being athletic and making plays. Meadows has been making plays this offseason, and he could make some when Alabama football hosts East Carolina on Sept. 5.

Last week, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb called Meadows “one of the hardest workers of camp” and said the sophomore has really impressed him.

Meadows could see the field a lot against East Carolina early in the game if Alabama’s wide receiver room is still banged up before Week 1.
