East Carolina is expected to start Mitch Griffis against Alabama to open the season on Sept. 5, but Emory Williams is also expected to take snaps at quarterbacks against the Tide, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Griffis transferred to East Carolina after the 2025 football season. He started his collegiate career at Wake Forest. After four seasons with the Demon Deacons, Griffis transferred to Marshall before stepping away from football. He served as a backup for Texas Tech in 2025 when he returned to football.

Williams transferred to East Carolina after three years at Miami.

Griffis has started in 10 games throughout his career, and he has completed 183 of his 299 pass attempts for 2,314 yards and 17 touchdowns.
