Alabama freshman DB goes from broken arm, game-time decision to impact player against Kentucky

Jireh Edwards got an opportunity to play in the first game of his college career against Kentucky on Saturday after being a game-time decision.

Edwards looked like he was more than itching to get on the field when he got his shot. He exploded into the Kentucky backfield on a safety blitz to start the fourth quarter to record a tackle for loss. The force he brought on the play knocked down Kentucky’s running back and quarterback.

The play was so disruptive and explosive that Kalen DeBoer thought the defensive back recorded a sack.

“Jireh Edwards, 19 days out of a broken arm, post-op, going out there getting a sack,” DeBoer said. “We got a lot of tough dudes.”

Edwards is a former five-star defensive back. Kane Wommack said the defensive back was obsessed with football while discussing the defensive back attempting to get back to the field after he was injured.

“That’s the challenge for Jireh, and we’ve already had those conversations.” Wommack said. “Say it takes whatever X amount of weeks to get him back and ready to go, when he gets back if he hasn’t stayed engaged, if he’s not apart of our walk throughs, if he’s not doing things from a meetings standpoint, then all of a sudden now he gets back physically, but mentally it may take two or three more weeks to go. And so the challenge is when you physically can do it, are you mentally in position to be able to go out and execute quickly. We are trying to bridge that gap and narrow that margin as much as possible. He is obsessed with the game of football, and so he’s one that I probably don’t have to keep my thumb on him in that regard, because he loves it. He’s going to stay engaged, and he’s already out there doing those things. He was in meetings this morning, which is really impressive. But he will be one that as soon as he gets back we want to get him on the field as quickly as possible because he will be a very productive player on our defense.”

Edwards looks as if he will continue to be a contributor for Alabama.
