Why a Virginia Tech transfer is having a ‘blast’ playing in Wommack’s defense at Alabama

Caleb Woodson is enjoying his time playing inside linebacker at Alabama under the Tide’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

Woodson is coming off a strong performance in the Crimson Tide’s 45-17 win over Kentucky in Lexington. The linebacker earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Wildcats. He finished the game with 12 total tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks.

The linebacker, who transferred from Virginia Tech to Alabama, is having a lot of fun playing for the Crimson Tide.

“I’m having fun playing football, but especially being in this defense, making plays, having a blast, trying to keep it going week to week,” Woodson told reporters.

Woodson is putting an emphasis on making sure he is around the football as much as possible, and it is evident on the film he has put together through two games with the Tide.

“Good things happen when you’re around the ball,” Woodson said. “I just try to make my focus on getting to the ball.”

Alabama football was able to impact Kentucky’s quarterback Kenny Minchey throughout Saturday’s game. Woodson said it was the first time he had two sacks in a game, but he wants to make it routine.

“That’s the goal, to get around the ball and make plays,” said Woodson.

Woodson starts at inside linebacker for the Crimson Tide alongside Luke Metz. The Tide will be looking to lean on both linebackers in the future.
