Wommack addresses Alabama giving up more than 200 rushing yards to South Carolina

Alabama football’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack addressed the Crimson Tide giving up 216 rushing yards to South Carolina on Saturday.

Matt Fuller led the Gamecocks on the ground with 112 rushing yards on 19 carries against Alabama. LaNorris Sellers had 72 rushing yards on 13 carries during the game, and Jabree Coleman added 20 yards on 3 carries. Each player averaged more than five yards per carry.

Wommack discussed what went into the Tide giving up those yards on Monday.

“Our rushing numbers were very disappointing,” Wommack said. “Really comes down to four explosive plays. The first play of the game, which, you know, never should have happened. And then really two probably major scrambles. You know, I give LeNorris (Sellers) a lot of credit. I mean, he is a terror when he pulls the ball down and runs it. And he gave us fits and extended drives for them that, you know, that ultimately they were able to get 2 touchdowns off of those drives that he extended with his feet. So some things that we certainly got to get cleaned up there.”

The Alabama defensive coordinator went on to say why he is still confident in the Tide’s ability to stop the run.

“But I will say there are a lot of really, really good things in the run game right now, just playing in and play out, the physicality we’re playing with, the consistency, with the exception of a couple of those scrambles and the big run to start the game,” Wommack told reporters. “So looking ahead this week to Mississippi State.”

Alabama will be looking to slow down Mississippi State this week in a highly anticipated matchup.
