The No. 6 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will face No. 2 Georgia in a highly anticipated SEC battle this weekend.
Both Alabama and Georgia will enter Saturday’s matchup as two of the hottest programs in college football. The Tide were able to defeat Mississippi State in authoritative fashion last weekend, while Georgia handled their business on the road against Vanderbilt.
The Crimson Tide defense will face an extremely tough opponent in Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton and the rest of the Dawgs’ high powered offense on Saturday. Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack recently shared his thoughts on Stockton prior to the matchup, as Wommack believes his defense will be ready despite the massive challenge.
“We are not going to blitz him at all on Saturday. We won’t bring any blitzes, it will all be 3-man rushes the whole game,” Wommack joked. “He’s really impressive. You can see he’s very comfortable, very decisive. And I think this is a credit to him and their coaching staff, he’s got great answers when you do pressure, he knows where to go with the ball. I think he’s done a really nice job in that regard, so like anything you still need to make a quarterback uncomfortable. You got to find creative ways of creating that pressure, when do we drop in coverage. But certainly he presents a significant challenge because he’s so dialed into what they are doing, and has great answers based off what a defense shows.”
Opposing quarterbacks have struggled immensely against Wommack and the Tide’s defensive unit this season. Alabama’s front seven has done a stellar job in creating constant pressure to begin the year, and the secondary has shown major improvement through the air in recent weeks as well.
Alabama’s defense as a whole will undoubtedly need to be at their best against Stockton and the Bulldogs’ offense this weekend, and Wommack appears to be ready for the challenge following his comments on Monday morning.
