Why Nick Saban wants to get rid of automatic spots in new playoff format

Nick Saban wants the best teams in the College Football Playoff.

The new format will include 12 teams for the first time this season.  Five of the highest-rated conference champions will be included along with the seven highest rated teams.

Saban is not a fan of the automatic spots going to conference champions.

“The downside is I just wish we could put the 12 best teams in the playoffs,” Saban said on ESPN’s College Football Live. “Not worry about conference champions and all that kind of stuff. If you do get beat in the conference championship game and you’re one of the best teams, you should still get in there because you played really quality opponents and you played good football…That’s my only concern about it. I just want to see the best 12 teams in it, and I think most people want to see the best 12 teams in it.”

Alabama will look to get into the playoff this season in its first year under Kalen DeBoer.
