Many talented offensive linemen have made their way through Alabama football, but the leader of the next wave is preparing himself to anchor the future of the Crimson Tide.
He came in the 2023 recruiting class with names such as Kadyn Proctor, Wilkin Formby, Olaus Alinen, and Myles McVay; however, he may become the best of the group. This former four-star arrived as an in-state talent from Anniston (Ala.) High School, but his versatility has caught the eye of Alabama’s offensive line coach, Chris Kapilovic. Roq Montgomery, formerly known as Ryqueze McElderry, was underrated in high school. He played in two games for the Tide’s 2023 Southeastern Conference Championship team, but he could be needed more this season — especially with the new 12-team playoff.

Montgomery added five pounds in the summer, taking the 6’3″ lineman to 337 pounds. A redshirt freshman, Montgomery has worked with the second-team offensive line at two positions in camp. Coach Kapilovic likes Montgomery’s growth and can see him being impactful for the team at some point. It could be during the upcoming season or at next year at the least, but Montgomery is getting developed for his opportunity. He highlight the in-state product on Wednesday to reporters.

“He is playing center and guard for us,” Kapilovic said about Montgomery. “I think he has grown in understanding the offense, the terminology, making the calls he needs to make, etc. I really think in his pass protection he has improved since spring. We need him to keep coming along and working on his athleticism. He has done some really positive things.”
We do not know when his number will be called, but Montgomery is prepared to step up.
He has looked good in practice snapping the ball and working at guard.
