Alabama’s defense is down its green dot communicator with Deontae Lawson done for the year.
Lawson, a junior inside linebacker, suffered a leg injury in the first half versus Oklahoma.
The Mobile (Ala.) native did not return to action as the Crimson Tide suffered a 3-24 loss last week in Norman, Okla. According to Kalen DeBoer, the Tide’s leader at middle linebacker is out for the Iron Bowl. Lawson’s season comes to an end with 76 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
His injury leads to Jihaad Campbell needing to step up as the communicator on defense. Campbell, a junior from New Jersey, now slides in as the “Mike” linebacker for the Crimson Tide.
He showed in summer workouts and fall camp that he can handle the communication piece.
Kane Wommack, Alabama’s defensive coordinator, raved about Campbell’s ability to communicate in the offseason. The 6-foot-3, 244-pounder leads the team in total tackles (97), solo tackles (51), tackles for loss (10.5), and sacks (five). He also has two pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Lawson would remain a presence in the locker room and in practice to help Campbell in this transition.
Justin Jefferson would become the starter at “Stinger” next to Campbell.
Jefferson’s skill set works better as an off-ball “see ball, get ball,” defender.
Alabama takes on Auburn this weekend in the Iron Bowl.
