During the offseason, Alabama was able to retain a lot of talent on the roster as well as on the coaching staff. One of the most impactful people returning to Tuscaloosa next season is defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.
Touchdown Alabama elaborates on the importance of Wommack being retained by the Crimson Tide.
Wommack is most notably known for running the ‘SWARM’ defense. In 2024, Alabama’s defense showed consistent improvement over the course of the season. It was enough for Wommack to retain his spot on the coaching staff and helped him garner some support from the Crimson Tide fanbase.
The backing of the coaching staff by the fanbase is not the determining factor in whether a coach stays or leaves, but it certainly has to help.
Wommack likely had opportunities elsewhere this offseason but turned them down to remain in Tuscalooosa. His defensive coaching philosophy is difficult to prepare for. He gets a lot of players involved and attacks opposing offenses from a variety of different ways.
Wommack’s unit struggled early on to find its footing. However, the unit was able to figure things out and perform at a high level toward the end of the season.
While it might fly under the radar, Wommack’s return is one that should bode well for Alabama moving forward.
