What are the expectations for Kane Wommack’s Alabama defense in 2025?

Mar 6, 2024; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack gives directions during practice of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team Wednesday.

Expectations are running rampant in Tuscaloosa ahead of the 2025 season. Alabama players and coaches are the subject of most expectations.

With defensive coordinator Kane Wommack entering his second season in Tuscaloosa, what are some reasonable expectations for the SWARM defense?

I think one of the most realistic expectations is that Alabama’s defense will have a top-10 unit in college football this upcoming season.

Seven starters are set to return on the defensive side of the ball. Each of them showed promise and improvement over the course of the season.

The four starters that departed the program will be missed in certain ways, but Alabama bright in a strong recruiting and transfer class. Not to mention, there were multiple players that did not start last season that still played a lot of meaningful snaps. That should be beneficial for Wommack and Alabama’s defense going forward.

Wommack struggled early on to get acclimated to the rigor that SEC brings week-in and week-out. Over time, Wommack was able to make adjustments and had his defense competing and performing at a high level.

Given a year of experience and knowledge of what it takes to compete in the SEC, I would expect him to take things up a notch.

Wommack runs a lot of different twists and looks to make things difficult for opposing offenses. He will have plenty of talent and depth to use in 2025. Wommack has an experienced defensive staff that understands the importance of improving on a week-to-week basis.

Wommack should have Alabama’s defense playing at a high level from start to finish. His coaching acumen and standard will help catapult the group to being one of the top defenses in college football during the 2025 season.
