Alabama football’s head coach Kalen DeBoer feels this offseason will be important for the development of Richard Young.

Young is preparing for his third season with the Crimson Tide after signing with Alabama as one of the top running back prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. DeBoer thinks growth is required for Young to take the next step in his game.

“He’s more of a physical back,” DeBoer said Friday after Alabama’s second spring scrimmage. “Got his carries today just like the rest of them, want to continue to see him just grow. I think a big offseason for him this summer is going to be important. He was working through some injuries last year.”

The Florida product rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries last season, earning carries in seven games during the 2024 season. Alabama’s veteran running back, Jam Miller expressed confidence in Young earlier in the spring.

“With me and Richard (Young), I feel like we can be a great duo,” Miller said. “And of course, all the others guys, we all just want to continue to get better…When the time comes he’s going to go out there and do his thing.”
