Sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell has officially been named as the Crimson Tide’s starter prior to kickoff in September.
Russell is a dazzling young quarterback with elite upside, as the sophomore was able to beat out junior Austin Mack for the Tide’s starting role. Russell was widely regarded as one of the top overall players from the 2025 class, and the former five-star recruit now finds himself with a golden opportunity in Tuscaloosa entering 2026.
Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb recently took a moment to share his thoughts on Russell’s versatility, as Grubb believes the sophomore will emerge as a dangerous weapon in numerous ways.
“He certainly has athletic ability, but I told him if that’s all they ever say about you that would be an insult,” Grubb said. “He takes that very seriously, he knows playing quarterback, understands processing, getting through reads quicker, is what’s going to make him a complete player. I would never want that stereotype for him that he ends up being a runaround guy back there, and he’s not. He’s an incredibly bright kid that understands pretty complex progressions. As long as we can keep him in those progressions and keep it friendly for him, he’s going to do great.”
Russell will enter his first season as the Tide’s starter with massive expectations considering the hype around him as a prospect. The sophomore will have a plethora of talent at his disposal as well, and Russell now finds himself in prime position to emerge as Alabama’s next superstar in 2026.
Grubb’s comments in regard to Russell’s progression and versatility are certainly notable, and the sophomore has clearly made a massive leap in his game this offseason nonetheless.
