On Wednesday the state of Alabama along with the rest of the college football world received the unfortunate news of the head coach of the Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, head tested positive for COVID-19.
Saban said in his statement that he had found out at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday and immediately left the facility and began to self-quarantine. The six-time national champion also shared that he is currently asymptomatic.
What was also shared in his statement was that offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian would “oversee preparations at the complex” while Saban continues to work from home.
During his Wednesday press conference, Saban mentioned Sarkisian’s past experience of being a head coach, possibly hinting that he will be the man to step in for the coach’s absence.
“Sark has been a head coach before,” Saban said. “I’m not sure exactly how this is gonna play out when the game comes whether I can have communication with people or not. We’ll have to research and figure that out.”
If Saban is unable to have an impact on Saturday’s game and beyond, Sarkisian will be the one to step in and take the head coach’s responsibilities.
Sarkisian has been a head coach twice in his career while with Washington (2009-13) and USC (2014-15), he has a career record of 46-35 in that position.
