The University of Alabama has so much depth at various positions on its football team, including inside linebacker.

Kane Wommack, the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator, spoke to reporters Thursday after the second practice of preseason camp in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He likes what he has in Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell, but a third name has emerged to be a starter in Wommack's defense as a linebacker. Justin Jefferson, a former junior college transfer from Pear River Community College in Kansas, has turned it on. The former four-star from Memphis (Tenn.) is prepared to take a massive jump from 2023.

Wommack sees Jefferson as a starter with Lawson and Campbell.

"Justin Jefferson had an unbelievable spring, and an even better summer," Wommack said. "Going into fall camp, I think Jefferson is right there with those other guys. I think we have three starter type linebackers from that position."

Wommack highlighted Jeremiah Alexander and Justin Okoronkwo too, but to speak highly of Jefferson is huge for his confidence and the inside linebacker room. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder plays well against the run, but he can also cover and bring pressure if needed.

Jefferson totaled just four tackles in 14 games last season, yet he he is destined for more. 

He recently changed his number from No. 28 to No. 15 heading into fall camp.
