Alabama spring practice breakdown: Grading tight end room for the Crimson Tide

Questions are still circling around Alabama football’s tight end room after spring football concluded on last Saturday.

The Crimson Tide lost its more productive receiving tight end from last season to the transfer portal when Amari Niblack decided to transfer to Texas after Nick Saban retired. With talented freshman, Caleb Odom, switching from tight end to wide receiver, Alabama looks to not have a true proven receiving threat at tight end at the moment. However, they do have some usable pieces at the position, who can block and have room get better at making an impact in the passing game.

CJ Dippre

Robbie Ouzts

Danny Lewis Jr.

Ty Lockwood

Josh Cuevas

Summary:

Dippre and Ouzts are the Crimson Tide’s most experienced tight ends heading into next season.

Dippre pulled in 11 receptions for 187 yards last season for the Tide after transferring from Maryland. He appeared in all 14 games and started 11 of them.

Ouzts also appeared in every game for the Crimson Tide last season and started in seven of them. The South Carolina product has continued to make strides towards becoming a complete tight end as he has been more so used as a lead blocker at full back during his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa.

The pair are the most recognizable members of the Tide’s current tight end room.

Danny Lewis Jr. may be the sleeper of this group. He contributed on special teams and offense throughout the 2023 football season and could be set to have his biggest year yet, but like several other members of Alabama’s tight end room, it remains to be seen.

Josh Cuevas recently transferred to Alabama and Ty Lockwood is heading into his second year with the Tide. Jay Lindsey, a three-star tight end out of Butler, Alabama, will join the Tide this summer.
