UA defensive coordinator nominated for Broyles Award

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was named as one of 34 semifinalist for the Broyles Award Wednesday, according to the Rotary Club of Little Rock (Ark.)

The award was created to recognize assistant coaches that are dedicated and hard working to the craft of college football.

Smart has been by Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban’s side since 2007. He was Saban’s assistant at Louisiana State University in 2004 as a defensive backs coach.

A former Georgia defensive back (1995-98), Smart has Alabama’s defense as one of the best in the nation. It has been stifling against the run, allowing 77.8 yards per game.

Opponents’ have averaged just 14.5 points per game and Alabama stands fourth nationally in sacks (38). Smart has this year’s group among the top 20 in interceptions with 15 for 442 yards and four touchdowns. Alabama is 10-1 on the season, and holds a No. 2 ranking in the College Football Playoff. Smart and the Crimson Tide can clinch an SEC West crown this week. It will be in an Iron Bowl showdown against Auburn.

Smart has previously been a recipient of the Broyles Award in 2009. He has also won a AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2012. Five finalist will be announced for the award on Nov. 30. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock, Ark.
