Veteran DB Maurice Smith not on UA’s roster

Ex-Alabama defensive back Maurice Smith (No. 21) in 2016 CFP title game vs. Clemson: Mark J. Rebilas - USA TODAY Sports

SEC Media Days kicked off at the Hyatt Regency-The Winfrey Hotel (Hoover, Ala.) on Monday, and one of the first interesting signs came from the conference’s 2016 football media guide.

Veteran defensive back Maurice Smith was not listed on Alabama’s roster. Smith, who enrolled at Alabama in 2013, was reported to be weighing “transfer options” last month. His three choices came down to Maryland, Georgia and Miami, but it’s Miami that seems to have him at this point.

Smith, a former four-star prospect, played in 38 career games for the Crimson Tide. He totaled 38 tackles, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. Despite being recruited as a true cornerback, he spent much of his time on special teams and as a extra defender in the team’s nickel and dime formations.
