Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick succeeds against LSU at safety

TUSCALOOSA—The game was for Eddie Jackson and one player that vowed to do his best for him was sophomore defensive back, Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, who accepted the challenge to replace Jackson, was worked at safety during two weeks of practice.

Alabama coach Nick Saban unveiled his wrinkle against Louisiana State University, and watched his young star make his veteran teammate proud. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound defender anchored a secondary that limited Tigers’ quarterback Danny Etling to 92 passing yards on 11 of 24 completions (45.8 percent).

Fitzpatrick aided the Crimson Tide in run support, holding Leonard Fournette to 35 yards rushing on 17 carries and was credited with three tackles. The New Jersey native made a critical play in the fourth quarter, recording his fourth interception of the year. Senior linebacker Ryan Anderson pressured Etling into a rushed throw, which landed in Fitzpatrick’s arms in good field position. Alabama would cash in on the opportunity by nailing a 25-yard field goal (Adam Griffith), to cap off a drive that took 9:51 off the clock in regulation.

Fitzpatrick’s pick gave the Tide nine on the season, while helping it obtain a 10-0 win.
