Could Alabama fans see a second straight Heisman winner?
Though it’s highly unlikely, there’s a chance that the coveted bronze trophy gets hoisted by another Crimson Tide player. Of the eight candidates remaining in ESPN’s Heisman watch, two hail from Alabama’s roster.
One is a model of consistency, while the other came as a surprise.
Defensive end Jonathan Allen has been sharp all year. He chose to forgo the 2016 NFL Draft and the move has paid off, as he’s among the team leaders in sacks (seven) and tackles for loss (7.5). Allen has also recorded two touchdowns, both coming on fumble returns. He currently anchors a defensive front that’s allowed 12.2 points, 68.8 rushing yards and 259.5 total yards per game.
During the preseason, the notion was between either Blake Barnett or Cooper Bateman for the starting job at quarterback. Jalen Hurts did more than just win the role as a true freshman; he also won over the team, fan base and college football media personnel too. His outing of 447 total yards (347 passing) and five scores in Alabama’s 51-3 win over Mississippi State locked him into this conversation.
He’s been setting records all season and if he collected nine more touchdowns, Hurts will become Alabama’s single season touchdown holder (27 as of now). Coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin look to continue developing his arm this week against Chattanooga. Louisville’s quarterback Lamar Jackson is the leader with 50 votes, but Hurts stands third with 18. Allen and Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers are tied for eighth with seven votes apiece. Rivalry week and conference championship games should tell the story, however, don’t be surprised if a Tide player gets invited to New York and delivers the Heisman to Tuscaloosa.
