Facts That Auburn Fans Hate About the Iron Bowl
By: Larry Burton
There are some things that easily certifiable facts that Auburn fans refuse to believe and if the do look them up, they certainly hate knowing them. With the Iron Bowl coming up this Saturday, here’s a chance to look at why Alabama fans like to beat their chest over this game and why it’s not as happy a subject for the fans in blue and orange.
Some of those facts are:
Alabama owns the series – 44-35-1
In the last eight years that these players have been out of elementary school Alabama has won six of eight contests.
Of the two Auburn wins in that eight year period, one was a one point win and the other was the famous kick six miracle where a missed field goal was run back.
Since the oldest players on the field are around 22 years of age, in these players lifetime when Auburn wins, it’s been considered an upset. Auburn has not been favored in many of those games.
Margin of victory backs this up. In the last eight years, Auburn’s margin of victory has averaged 3.5 points in their two wins. Alabama’s margin of victory over the last eight years is 24.16, therefore you can say that when Auburn has won since these players elementary school years they barely won, but when Alabama wins, it’s a beat down. Auburn largest win in eight years was 7 points while in that same time frame Alabama has beaten Auburn by double digits in five of their six wins including a 49-0 butt kicking and a 36-0 thumping.
In the last 25 years, Alabama has won 14 of those games and that includes the time frame where Auburn had its all time winning streak against Alabama. So even when Auburn was at their very best, they still couldn’t pull ahead of Alabama.
In this series, Alabama has shut out Auburn 15 times. Auburn has managed just 7 times to keep Alabama off the board.
Since Nick Saban’s arrival the average score in this series has been Alabama 33.5 – Auburn 18.3
While Auburn likes to brag about their six game winning streak over Alabama during the Tubberville years, Alabama has had a nine game winning streak, a separate nine out ten winning streak and yet another streak of seven out of eight years.
This series has decided more SEC championships than any other. These two teams account for 33 championships, but once again, Auburn comes up short as Alabama went on to win 25 SEC titles with Auburn only 8.
These are the hard cold facts in this series and they aren’t easy for Auburn fans to swallow.
But if you’re an Alabama fan, I do have to mention that though Alabama is a big favorite in this Saturday’s contest, Auburn has won many games as an underdog and they win 44% of the games played, so they’re due. But then that’s all supposition and the above bullet points are facts.
