Former Alabama safety Geno Matias-Smith returns to program as off-field analyst

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Whether he’s referred to as Geno Smith or Geno Matias-Smith, the ex-University of Alabama standout returns to Tuscaloosa in an off-field role — joining Denzel Devall, Nick Perry and Josh Chapman as an assistant.

Aaron Suttles of Tuscaloosa News broke the news, calling Matias-Smith’s latest role an “intern-like” capacity. He was a four-star prospect from Atlanta, Ga., when he signed in the Crimson Tide’s 2012 class.

He was a part of two national championship teams (2012, 2015) and three Southeastern Conference title squads (2012, 2014-15), while collecting 145 tackles, eight pass breakups and an interception at safety.
