The Truth About the Iron Bowl Auburn Fans Hate
By: Larry Burton
Since Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, his mission was mostly two fold, to make Alabama a national power again and beat Auburn. Even legendary coach Bryant knew that was the job he was hired to do and often said remarks like, “It’s not enough to win every game but one every season if you don’t beat that school down the road.”
Well, Nick Saban is now 10 years into the Iron Bowl this coming game and the truth of what has happened in that time is something that Auburn fans hate to hear both because it’s true and it’s irrefutable.
The first simple truth is that he owns Auburn. Gone are the days of Tommy Tuberville holding up fingers displaying his streak against Alabama. In the last 10 games in this series, Saban is 7-3 including the last three in a row.
The second is, during the current 10 year period of the Saban era, when Alabama wins, it’s usually a butt whipping. When Auburn wins, it’s usually by some miracle play. Auburn has not beaten Alabama by more than 7 points in this time in their three wins. Alabama has won by as much as 49-0.
Alabama wins by an average of over 23 points per game when they’ve played Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Therefore, the claim that Bama fans make that when Auburn wins it’s almost an accident, but when Bama wins, it’s a thumping is not just brag, it’s fact.
Lastly, and this one is open to subjective argument, is that Alabama will continue to dominate this series as long as both head coaches stay at their current jobs. Gus Malzahn is a pedestrian coach who without a deal breaking, dual threat quarterback who can pull off a miracle doesn’t stand much of a chance beating a Nick Saban coached team. Auburn does not have the men to beat Alabama, nor has not recruited to Alabama’s level and therefore can’t match the talent level in not just the first string, but on the whole team.
So not only can Malzahn not match Saban’s recruiting, the history has shown us that he also doesn’t match Saban in making adjustments on the fly.
And there they are, the truths about the Iron Bowl that Auburn fans just hate to hear.
