An illustrious career in Starkville seems to have been enough to jump Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen up the ranks of D-1 coaching hires. According to CFB Insider, Brett McMurphy, Florida has come to an agreement to make him their new Head Coach:

Mullen, who went 69-46 as head coach of the Bulldogs, was the offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer during his championship-winning tenure in Gainesville. With the Gators’ recent offensive struggles, Dan Mullen could be the answer they have long searched for. He is touted as one of the best quarterback gurus in the game, and his track record speaks for itself. Under Meyer at Utah, Mullen was responsible for the evolution of eventual number one pick, Alex Smith. In following Meyer to Florida he was also responsible for Chris Leak and the Heisman-winning Tim Tebow.
Of course, that is not all, as he continued to show off his quarterback prowess even as a head coach at Mississippi State. He turned a run-first quarterback in Dak Prescott into a Heisman contender and eventual NFL Rookie superstar for the Dallas Cowboys. The last two seasons he has taken a kid in Nick Fitzgerald, who had only thrown the ball a handful of times in high school, and turned him into a pre-season Heisman underdog.
If Mullen is able to recreate what he has done so well at Florida, with the Gator’s superior prestige and rich history, they have a real shot at competing with Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs for the SEC East crown.
