Will Alabama Fans Now Become Ohio State Fans For One Game?
By: Larry Burton
It may be ironic, but a school that Alabama fans have no inkling of goodwill toward may become their second favorite team this weekend when Ohio State plays Wisconsin for the Big 10 championship. They’ll be pulling hard for them, or they should be.
Why you ask?
A two loss Big 10 champion who was shell shocked in one of those losses by 55 points will not be picked to go into the four team playoff over a one loss Alabama. Wisconsin, who has played a much weaker schedule would not be picked either. That could put Alabama in a much more secure position to make the playoffs themselves.
Therefore, Alabama fans will be cheering on the Buckeyes like they were dyed in the wool Ohio State fans born and bred.
They may also be cheering on TCU, because if the Horn Frogs beat Oklahoma, another rival for that slot could be taken out helping Alabama’s case as well as a two loss TCU would more than likely not be taken over a one loss Alabama.
Despite Nick Saban’s unbelievable and unprecedented national title streak, he has but one undefeated season. Every other national championship came about because his teams needed help from other teams to make it to the big game. So the truth is, no matter how great Saban is, he’s needed help, luck, divine intervention or whatever you want to call it and once again this year, he’ll need it again.
So if it takes Alabama fans to cheer on a once hated rival in the form of Ohio State, they’ll do it. Though it won’t leave as bad a taste in their mouth, they’ll gladly cheer for the TCU team to take down the Sooners too.
They say politics makes strange bed fellows. I guess the same could be said about college football too.
