Alabama OL Matt Womack to miss spring practice with foot injury

Matthew Emmons - USA TODAY Sports

After fighting through a multitude of injuries to capture a College Football Playoff National Championship last season, the University of Alabama football program will have to endure its entire spring semester without one of its leaders along the offensive line.

Per an article from BamaOnline’s Charlie Potter (247Sports), Matt Womack suffered a broken bone in his foot during offseason workouts and is scheduled to have surgery this week.

He’s projected to miss six weeks, which gives sophomores Jedrick Wills an opportunity to earn some reps with the first-team unit. Womack, a native of Hernando, Miss., started all 14 games at right tackle in 2017 – assisting the Crimson Tide to a 26-23 overtime victory over Georgia.

The 6-foot-7, 324-pound junior did not allow a sack in nine matchups, including Southeastern Conference games against Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Auburn and Georgia.

He graded out at 90 percent or better on his assignments versus Fresno State, Vanderbilt and Clemson. While helping Alabama total 40-plus points in seven games, Womack cleared the way for running back Damien Harris to record 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He received SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors after his performance against Frenso State, where he blocked for 305 rushing yards – including a career-high 154 yards for quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Spring practice starts today for the Tide at 3:30 pm CT, and this year’s A-Day game will be on Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 pm at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
