Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa snatches second National QB of the Week honor

John David Mercer - USA Today Sports

He is on a fast track to the Heisman Memorial Trophy and becoming the No. 1 overall selection for next year’s NFL Draft. For Tua Tagovailoa, the University of Alabama quarterback is shattering records and making it very difficult for the next signal caller to surpass him.

His quick strike arm, bevy of talented receivers, and the offensive mind of Steve Sarkisian has propelled the junior to his second national award from the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Tagovailoa, a native Hawaiian, was named Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

His performance versus Mississippi at Bryant-Denny Stadium was legendary, as he set school records for touchdown passes (six) and total scores (seven).

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder completed 26 of 36 passes for 418 yards in a 59-31 win for the Crimson Tide over the Rebels.

It was the third time this season that Tagovailoa collected over 300 yards passing. He navigates a group that is fourth in scoring (51.8 ppg) and total offense (554.6 ypg) in college football.

Once a five-star in the 2017 class, Tagovailoa has completed 113 of 148 passes for 1,718 yards with 25 touchdowns (two rushing) to no turnovers in five games.

In terms of career numbers, he is now fourth all-time in passing yards (6,320), first in total touchdowns (86) and tied for first in scoring tosses (77).

Tagovailoa will have a shot to advance over AJ McCarron (2009-13) on Alabama’s all-time list for touchdown passes next week.
