Alabama CB Trevon Diggs emerging as a potential top-20 draft pick

Trevon Diggs returns fumble for touchdown vs. Tennessee

Before taking the field versus Tennessee and Arkansas, he told local reporters that he had not played his best game and he wanted better communication from the defense across the board.

Trevon Diggs got both in the last two weeks and now has NFL scouts looking at him as a potential top-20 pick for next year’s draft.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pounder has not allowed a touchdown pass thrown on him, while he leads Alabama with three interceptions.

Despite getting burned once on a chunk yardage play versus Texas A&M – Jhamon Ausbon – opposing teams have not tested Diggs much this season. He is second on the team in pass breakups (five) and has recorded a defensive touchdown in back-to-back weeks.

In games against Tennessee and Arkansas, he ignited fans with a 100-yard fumble return and an 84-yard pick returned for a score. Behind him, Alabama’s defensive secondary has rendered quarterbacks to completing 55.1 percent of their passes (145-for-263) and an average of 180.1 passing yards per game. He came to Alabama under the tag of an “athlete,” but Diggs has transformed himself into an elite cornerback. The senior captains a group that has not surrendered a 100-yard target and with LSU on the horizon, it’s clicking at the right time.

Before removing his tweet, Stefon Diggs – brother of Trevon Diggs and headline receiver of the Minnesota Vikings – he said his younger brother is a ‘first-rounder, No Cap.’

The SEC Network even dropped a tweet, displaying the accomplishment of Trevon Diggs in the last two weeks.

Even with it poking fun at Stefon, the elder brother does not mind.

The competitions between both growing up has molded a shutdown corner in Trevon and according to Pro Football Focus, he was exceptionally dominant versus the Razorbacks.

Diggs anchored a unit that forced Nick Starkel and John Stephens Jones to a 42.3% completion rating (11-for-26) for 107 passing yards with one touchdown to three interceptions.

On Wednesday, Nick Saban told reporters how important it is for Alabama to have playmakers on defense like Diggs.

“When you have playmakers like that, it’s like three-point shooters in basketball,” he said.

“When you have them, you make a lot of three’s. When you have playmaker type guys, they make a lot of plays. Whether it’s batted balls, pressuring the quarterback, knocking balls down, tackling guys, reacting quickly to plays that helps them recover in certain situations, and he  has definitely showed the ability to do that.”

If not for a foot injury last season, Diggs would have been instrumental for the Crimson Tide versus Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

With a nose for the ball and the instincts to score, “Diggs Island” is not playing around.
