As fun as it sounded on paper, Alabama will not be playing Notre Dame in 2020.
On Saturday Alabama’s athletic director Greg Byrne took to Twitter to end any speculation and reports about the possible Week 1 matchup.
Byrne responded to a tweet from a radio interview with Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan on 97.7 fm with Thom Abraham.
“Gary Stoken of the Chic Fil A Kickoff Classic said on the show that Notre Dame has been floated as a week one opponent for Alabama in South Bend, Tuscaloosa or Dallas…and there is a scenario that Virginia-Va Tech play in Atlanta if ACC/SEC goes “Conference +1” schedule,” read the tweet.
Byrne definitively responded shortly after.
Looking forward to our future H&H series w/ @NDFootball.
However, contrary to reports, we will not be playing this season. #RollTide 🐘 https://t.co/B3JV24sabb

After the Pac-12 announced it will be transitioning to an in-conference only schedule, Alabama has been left without an opponent on Labor Day weekend.
Although they will not be facing the Fighting Irish in 2020, the Crimson Tide have scheduled a home and home series for 2028 and 2029.
