Alabama tight end Carl Tucker named to 2020 John Mackey Award watch list

Jeremy Brevard - USA TODAY Sports

This will be his first season playing football at the University of Alabama, should a season be played, but Carl Tucker is already getting preseason award recognition.

According to an announcement from the Friends of John Mackey via New York on Friday, the graduate transfer from North Carolina has been named to the John Mackey Award watch list.

The honor is presented annually to college football’s most outstanding tight end, and it is voted on by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. As a native of Concord, N.C., Tucker played in 38 career games for the Tar Heels from 2016 to 2019.

Injuries caused him to miss 10 games – including eight in 2017 – however, he is now in the hands of the best strength and conditioning program under coaches David Ballou and Dr. Matt Rhea.

The 6-foot-2, 248-pounder totaled 549 yards receiving with four touchdowns on 36 catches at North Carolina.

Tucker has big-play athleticism in the passing game and he blocked for eight 500-yard rushers throughout his tenure in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He set the edge for Michael Carter to record a 1,000-yard season (1,003) in 2019 with three scores on 177 carries. Nick Saban has mentioned a number of times about how the Crimson Tide needs a playmaker at tight end.

Carter offers the complete package and Tide fans are excited to see him in action.
