One thing was holding Josh Jobe back from becoming a star at the University of Alabama; however, Nick Saban said on Monday that the junior has mastered the task.
He put together his finest performance in 2019 versus Michigan in the Citrus Bowl, totaling six tackles, one pass breakup and one interception for the Crimson Tide. Alabama secured a 35-16 victory, and defensive coordinator Pete Golding saw an opportunity for Jobe to grow.
The 6-foot-1, 192-pounder arrived in the Tide’s 2018 recruiting class with Patrick Surtain II and Jalyn Armour-Davis as a four-star.
Saban loved his size, athleticism and competitive fire, but the Miami (Fla.) native had a problem with being too emotional at times. His passion would bleed into his game to where he was called for multiple pass interference and defensive holding fouls. After ending his sophomore campaign with 28 tackles, one interception, three breakups and one fumble recovery, Jobe has gotten much better in channeling his technique.
Golding wants him to lock up the left cornerback role, as Alabama looks to get more guys on the field.

According to Saban, he said Jobe has been ‘more consistent’ during this fall camp.
“He’s done a really good job in that area,” Saban said of Jobe not being emotional. “Josh is a real competitive guy. He plays with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He gives great effort. Josh has worked on that. He has made great progress. He’s aware and he has played with a lot more poise in this camp because of it.”
When players let their emotions dictate everything, Saban said it leads to bad choices and decisions in games. With him maturing in this area, Jobe is about to see more time as a starter.
Despite playing in 26 career games, he has only had two starts. His ability to be physical as well as trust his instincts make him an asset.
