Devonta Smith signed his National Letter of Intent with Alabama football Wednesday.
Smith is a product of La Salle High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He de-committed from Ohio State and verbally committed to Alabama in June. The Ohio native said it was Nick Saban, who pushed him to pick the Tide over the Buckeyes.
“That was one of the main reasons why I chose Alabama,” Smith said. “I know I will be able to go one on one day in and day out with the best person, who can develop me the most out of anybody in the country. I felt like that was a great reason to commit to them. Alabama is a great football program run by, who I think is the greatest coach of all time. On the aspect of football, the program is greatly established with the payers, who have come in and brought into the process, that Nick Saban brings. I just look at it as home, to be honest.”
The Alabama signee has some family ties to the Alabama football program. Former Alabama running back, Shaun Alexander is Smith’s older cousin.
Alabama has plans to use Smith all over the secondary. He has experience at playing cornerback and safety. Smith knows how to make secure tackles in the open field and plays the ball well in coverage.
The La Salle product finished his senior year with 51 tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions.
