Even with the season over, there are still some interesting nuggets to learn about the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Especially during the 2020 season which provided so much uncertainty surrounding every game and brought up new obstacles for players and coaches to overcome. One obstacle the players faced in the extended offseason was the question of where to workout?
With gyms and facilities shutdown along with team facilities, the student-athletes found themselves a bit limited with what was at their disposal.
But Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones found a way to work around the hardship by coming up with a routine on his own and committing to it while also building his own gym.
“Mac put together his own little gym at the house and he worked out on a very regular schedule like he always does,” his father Gordon Jones said during an appearance on “In My Own Words”. “He put together his playbook, studied his plays, worked out, ate, and slept and that’s pretty much all he did.”
Jones even went a step further by inviting his friend who was training to be a navy seal to help push him to reach his goals.
“He had a friend from high school that was training to be a navy seal, and he came by and was his workout partner,” Jones said. “They kind of maintained their own social distance and then had kind of their own bubble. They kind of pledged to each other they weren’t gonna socialize or do anything like that, (which) might expose them to COVID. And they were workout buddies.
“It was kind of funny because they put the gym, ultimately, we thought it was gonna go in the garage, but it ultimately went on our back porch and so we used to call it ‘the yard’. So you can look out our window and see Jack and Mac working out in ‘the yard’ you know, and they were doing everything they would normally do at the University of Alabama preparing for the season.”
The outside gym proved to work for the Manning Award winner as he looked strong, composed and focused all season long as he helped lead Alabama to its 18th national championship.
