One former Alabama player will be making his return to Tuscaloosa. But this time he will be trading in his pads and helmet for a whistle.

According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Shyheim Carter is expected to join Nick Saban’s staff as a graduate assistant.

Carter, a former four-star recruit, was a standout in Alabama’s nickel packages in 2018 and 2019. He finished his career with the Crimson Tide with three total interceptions.

He spent last season in the NFL, mainly on the practice squad for the Atlanta Falcons after being originally picked up by the New York Jets.

This hiring shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for Saban has raved about Carter’s knowledge of the game in the past and said he would rank him in the “top two to three” players he’s coached who have the most knowledge and versatility of the game.

“Shy has actually played every position here for us,” Saban said in 2019.

“He started out at cornerback, we made him star and because he was a pretty star, we sort of had him play money. We also have him play safety. He can answer every question in a meeting about every position. He would be a great coach. It creates a lot of diversity for him as a player and it means something to him.”
