Alabama’s defense is expected to return to its elite standard this season.
Freddie Roach, a former Crimson Tide linebacker, is in his second year coaching the defensive line.
He produced an early-round draft pick in Christian Barmore; however, the Tide struggled at times getting off the ball. With the veterans it has returned, Roach anticipates having more consistency up front. Phidarian Mathis, a fifth-year senior, told reporters at SEC Football Media Days that Alabama’s defense will be great.
Everything starts with the front line generating penetration and offsetting these offenses.
On Monday, yours truly of Touchdown Alabama Magazine laid out the expectations for Roach via In My Own Words.
Expectations for Alabama’s Freddie Roach
1. Alabama’s defensive front must stop the run (no 100-yard rushers)
2. Alabama has to create more pressure with its front line (more sacks)
3. No drop-off in production in terms of substituting players
Roach and the defensive line start fall practice on Friday.
