The fast-paced high scoring contest everyone predicted between Alabama and Ole Miss turned out to be quite the opposite, at least through the first two quarters.
A major emphasis was put on the Rebels high-powered offense and quarterback Matt Corral throughout the week for the Crimson Tide and its defense was locked in from the get-go. The opening drive of the game seemed to be a continuation of the game a year ago.
The Rebels were able to pick up a few fourth-down conversions and drove deep into Alabama territory. But on a fourth and short in the endzone Alabama defensive back Jordan Battle and defensive lineman, Tim Smith turned the tide with a huge fourth-down stop giving Alabama the ball back.
From there on out the Crimson Tide defense gave the Rebels a fight for every yard it gained, even forcing them to turn the ball over on downs two more times in the second quarter.
But instead of rushing down the field and putting up points as fast as possible, Alabama’s offense drained the clock and controlled the line of scrimmage through the run game. Running back Brian Robinson who missed last week’s game against Southern Miss brought physicality and toughness up the middle for the Crimson Tide.
Quarterback Bryce Young was also extremely efficient through the first two quarters of play completing passes 11 of 15 for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
With the short fields provided by the defense, Alabama was able to jump out to a 28-0 lead at the half and will get the ball after to start the second half.
