Even on a Georgia defense that is riddled with future pros and All-Americans, it’s impossible to miss Jordan Davis.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and 340 pounds, Davis is the driver in the middle of the Bulldogs front seven and has terrorized his opponents throughout the season. His play has caught the attention and respect of Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, as well as linebacker Will Anderson who both raved about his impact.
“He’s a great player,” Anderson said on Monday. “He’s big. I mean he’s like the unit of their defense, honestly. He’s pretty hard to move around. Just watching him, I feel like he’s a really great athlete for that size, and he’s a really good player.”
Just looking at Davis’ statistics won’t tell the full story of how important he is on the field. Just 24 tackles and two sacks doesn’t reflect just how disruptive he is in the middle clearing pathways for the Bulldogs linebackers to make plays in the run game. This has led to Kirby Smart’s unit being the top run defense in the nation allowing just 2.5 yards per carry and 79.4 rushing yards per game.
Davis has also received a bit of Heisman Trophy buzz for his play, showing just how valuable he is.
“I think it’s cool,” Anderson said when asked about defenders being recognized for awards. “Especially nowadays, a lot of defensive guys don’t get as much attention. But I think that’s just the mutual respect, and I think it’s cool.”
Young probably won’t be describing Davis as “cool” when the game begins on Saturday, but until then he has nothing but praise for the Bulldog.
“He’s just a really, really good player,” Young said. “He’s definitely made a big impact on a lot of games, and it shows on film. He’s a really good player, and overall, it’s a really really good team.”
