Alabama’s corner of Twitter better known as “Gump Twitter” has built a reputation of uniting together ahead of the Crimson Tide’s biggest challenges.
On Tuesday, with less than a week to go before the national championship game a new trend was started on the app by University of Alabama graduate Adam Weil as he came up with a fun way for users to signify they’re a members of “Gump Twitter.”

Rather than handing out blue checkmarks for verification, Weil, a 2021 graduate majoring in public relations, came up with the idea to have fans put the Gi emoji next to their username. It also turns out that the application process isn’t nearly as thorough as Twitter’s own.

“With the upcoming championship, I want players and fans to see it on their timeline and recognize all the people supporting the team and embracing the trend,” Weil told Touchdown Alabama. “I also figured it’d be a fun and easy way for people to feel like they’re a part of something bigger than themselves and have some fun.”
The use of the Gi comes from the popular “Crimson Crane” celebration which was started by Alabama wide receivers John Metchie and Jameson Williams. After every touchdown scored, the two would strike the famous pose from the movie “The Karate Kid”, and has evolved into a cultural phenomenon across the Crimson Tide fanbase.
Weil has had a knack for not only going viral amongst the Alabama corner of the internet but has seen his posts reach the desktops of those at ESPN.

The trend that’s been sweeping the internet for mere hours has already a large turnout as numerous Alabama fans and even players have put the emoji in their bios.
