We are in a NIL culture of college football.
The first question student-athletes are asking on the recruiting trail is concerning the collectives of a school’s NIL or how many NIL funds they can generate. Nick Saban built the Alabama program on education, winning national championships, and pushing players towards the generational wealth of the National Football League. He has expressed his displeasure with the current model, but Saban has to move with the times. During his meeting with boosters for the 50-day countdown to the World Games in Birmingham, Saban may have challenged the boosters to show more support for the Crimson Tide in today’s NIL climate.
He used Texas A&M as an example to maybe get Alabama’s collectives up for athletes.
States such as Texas and California have the means of providing athletes with any offer they want. Saban wants to compete within the sport’s rules, but he wants to keep the Tide at the top of the game too. Will Alabama still get the players that want to be in Tuscaloosa for the culture and championships? What will the future of Crimson Tide football be in a NIL-driven sport?
On Wednesday, Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine gave his perspective via In My Own Words.
