Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is a preseason candidate for several awards.

The junior from California has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watchlist. The honor, named after Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas, goes to the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback in college football.

It recognizes a player’s accomplishments on the field, and their character, academic achievements, and leadership qualities off the field. The A.O. Smith Corporation presents the Golden Arm Award, and Young is one of 76 candidates for the award. He set Alabama’s single-season school record for passing yards (4,872), touchdown passes (47), and total touchdowns (50) as a sophomore in 2021. Young led the Crimson Tide to a Southeastern Conference Championship and nearly a College Football Playoff National Championship. He became the first Alabama signal-caller to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy.

The 6-foot, 194-pounder is trying to become the first player since Archie Griffin (1974-75, Ohio State) to win back-to-back Heisman trophies. Alabama has had three quarterbacks — Jay Barker (1994), AJ McCarron (2013), and Mac Jones (2020) — win the Johnny Unitas honor since 1987. Young looks to add his name as the fourth recipient this season.
