Expansion is on the way with an expected start date.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the College Football Playoff board of managers agreed to a new 12-team playoff format on Friday. The model is expected to be instilled during the 2026 season following the current playoff contract, but Thamel reports there is a chance it could come sooner.

ESPN had previously reported on Wednesday that there was “momentum” from the 11 presidents to come to an agreement by today.

The decision from the board was unanimously approved.
